For many restaurants, finding an original identity can be difficult, but not at Lake Street Cafe.

Lynn Shovan, co-owner of the popular Elkhart Lake restaurant, said, “Over the years we have continually dedicated ourselves to emphasize on service as much as we do creating a unique menu because good food just doesn’t stand alone.”

Pride in both food and service are not the only things that radiate upon entering the restaurant. A colorful ambiance greets customers in the casual dining area, which includes a bar and partly exposed kitchen.

History of Elkhart Lake blankets the walls in a truly unique way, paying homage to the famed resort town and racing heritage.

Shovan said, “Our restaurant features two different dining areas. The casual side is very colorful and bright while the main dining room is a bit more quaint with white linens and candles for ambiance.”

Combining both casual and formal dining creates a juxtaposition that complements the vibrant menu.

“Our menu is something we collaborate on as a team,” Shovan said. “It comes from things we like, new ideas, and is often something we have fun experimenting with.”

Vibrant and fresh ingredients create a unique flair from seafood to pasta to steak. “Our staff is very experienced and takes a lot of pride in the food we serve.”

Seasonal ingredients are often used when available from local farmers markets, which are especially abundant during the summer months.

Adjacent to the building is an outdoor dining area that customers can enjoy during the summer season. Jokingly, Shovan added, “The outdoor dining area is always weather and mosquito permitting. In Wisconsin, those two are never up to us.”

Among the list of things that make Lake Street Cafe unique is the wine menu.

“When we first opened, one of our biggest goals was to have a Wine Spectator accredited wine menu,” Shovan said. “We accomplished that goal after our fourth year and have been given an Award of Excellence since 2003.”

Lake Street Cafe offers customers over 600 wines from all over the world, 40 of which can be purchased by the glass.
