34 years down on Hilbert’s Main Street
The Live Life Smiling office has been a fixture along Hilbert’s Main Street for many years.

Over the years, Hilbert’s Main Street has been home to many small businesses, all of which have played an important role in shaping our community and adding to the quality of life here.

For nearly a century, Schomburg Hardware Store was the place to get all your gadgets, tools and supplies. After the fire in 2003, Main Street Art Works took over the space and enriched our community with beautiful art shows for over a decade. Before it was 4th & 5, locals wet their whistles at Albers Bar. Puls Motors, Stengels’s Sav-Mor, Samson Funeral Home, and Manz Pharmacy all called Main Street home at one time or another; the U. S. Post Office, Hilbert Mini-Mart, Village Hearthstone and Jack’s Barber Shop still do.

One business, in particular, has continued to provide the people of our community with excellent dental care for over 55 years. You may know it as the Hilbert Clinic, Hilbert Family Practices, Live Life Smiling Family Dentistry or simply Dr. Asp’s Office.

Hilbert Professional Building

Built in 1960, the Hilbert Professional Building was comprised of a physician’s office, a legal firm and a dental office. Dr. E. John was the first dentist at the Hilbert Clinic during the early 1960s. After Dr. John’s passing, Dr. Jon Wagner bought the business in 1966 and remained there for 15 years until Dr. Rob Asp purchased it from him in 1981. At that time, the practice still shared space with the physician’s office so they were collectively known as Hilbert Family Practices. In the late 1980s, Dr. Asp acquired the remainder of the building and expanded his office. The name remained the same until 2012, when Dr. Asp opened a second location in Appleton and changed it to Live Life Smiling Family Dentistry.

In the last 34 years, Dr. Asp and his team have had the privilege to care for over 6,000 patients, many of them families who have been patients of his since he first came to Hilbert. Some families he has treated for five generations, while others have moved away and still travel back for cleanings and check-ups.

“I am truly grateful to have a job I love and honored to be able to work in a community where I know and care about the people,” Dr. Asp said. “It’s been a delight to watch kids I’ve treated grow up, start their own families and now bring their children to the office.”

Along with the ever-changing town and people, there have been many advancements made in dentistry that Dr. Asp attributes his longevity towards.

“Lots has changed in dentistry since I first started practicing,” he recalls. “I have a great team, most of whom have been with me over 30 years. All of us are hungry to learn and we value bringing new technology and treatment options to our patients.”

Technology and education

By frequenting continuing education courses, completing in-office training sessions and keeping current with the latest products and systems available, Dr. Asp and his team are able to provide the highest level of care to their patients. Some of the most impressive technology they use today includes Laser Therapy, the SOPROLIFE Intraoral Camera, and the iTero digital scanner with Smile Simulator.

Laser therapy is being used in dentistry to help treat gum disease, tooth decay, TMJ dysfunctions and even whiten teeth. In some cases, laser therapy can be used in place of the noisy traditional dental drill, providing a quieter option that helps minimize pain, bleeding and swelling.

The SOPROLIFE camera uses safe LED technology to detect decay, breakage and problem areas before they are visible with x-rays. By diagnosing these issues sooner, Dr. Asp is able to offer early treatment options to patients and help avoid costly and painful procedures further down the road.

“Early treatment is the key to having a healthy mouth for life,” Dr. Asp said. “People who come in for regular check-ups and receive recommended treatment have fewer emergencies and lower dental costs over the course of their lifetime.”

The iTero digital scanner allows for full-mouth impressions to be taken by a small camera without the hassle of messy putty materials or uncomfortable impression bite trays. The iTero provides more accurate images of the mouth and takes much less time than traditional impression gathering methods.

Leading Invisalign provider

Dr. Asp has extensive training and experience with both fixed and invisible orthodontics. He has been providing fixed orthodontics since the early 1980s and was one of the first dentists in the state to offer Invisalign invisible braces when the product first came out over 10 years ago. He is one of only a handful of dentists in the state to be recognized as a Premier Provider by Align Technology, the parent company of Invisalign. He’s successfully treated over 400 patients with Invis-
