Zion Lutheran Church of New Holstein is approaching its centennial in 2015.
The congregation was officially incorporated in 1915. Zion has been served by 10 pastors during its 95-year history and blessed by God’s grace with dedicated members and staff.
The Rev. John Schenck is the current pastor serving nearly 500 members at Zion. Pastor Schenck and his wife Jan came to New Holstein in 2003. Sara Cigelske was called in 2007 to serve as Zion’s director of music and Christian education. Having two full-time staff members provides a variety of opportunities for members of all ages to share their faith in scripture, song and fellowship.
The staff also has been joined on a part-time basis by Sara’s husband Azor, who is enrolled in the Specific Ministry Program and serves as a vicar as he continues his education toward becoming a minister.
Vocal groups include a mixed choir, a men’s choir and a children’s choir. Instrumental groups consist of an adult praise band, a youth praise band, an adult hand chime choir and a youth hand chime choir. Duets and solos also feature accompaniments with keyboard, flute, violin and trumpet.
Sunday worship services are at 7:45 and 10:15 between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Contemporary services are held at the late service on the first and third Sundays of the month. A traditional service is held at the early service on the third Sunday. A blended order of service is used at all other services. Summer worship is at 9 a. m. on Sunday and 7 p. m. Wednesdays.
Educational opportunities include 9 a. m. Sunday School classes for prekindergarten through eighth grade. A high school Bible class and multiple adult Bible studies are offered on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Fellowship groups and organizations include the Women in Mission, Zion Adult Fellowship, Lutheran Youth Fellowship and the Altar Guild.
Holy Week will begin with Palm Sunday Choral Services at both worship services on April 1. A Maundy Thursday communion service will be held at 7 p. m. and Good Friday services at 1:30 and 7 p. m. On April 8 the Easter Sunrise service is at 6:30 a. m. followed by an Easter Breakfast. A second Easter Sunday service will be at 9 a. m. The public is cordially invited to attend any and all services and concerts.
A special concert this year will be held on the afternoon of Palm Sunday (April 1) as the choirs from several other area churches will be performing seasonal songs along with Zion’s groups starting at 2 p. m.
Other upcoming events include the annual Pancake Supper and Vacation Bible School in June.
