Jill’s Hair Design is an independent business located inside Lois’ Custom Haircare, 103 Southside Shopping Center in Chilton (between The Insurance Shoppe and the Chilton Laundromat).
Jill Moyer started her business Feb. 2, 2007 and recently celebrated her six-year anniversary at the Chilton location. Coworker Lois Wagner-Forstner has been at the same location for 14 years. “Although we are a separate entity, we work together as a team and share insight to benefit our customers,” Moyer said. “We are always learning from each other.”
Jill resides in Chilton with her daughters Brittany and Ashley Ecker and Payton Moyer.
Their salon provides a friendly and relaxing atmosphere with complimentary coffee, water and soda. The salon is wheelchair accessible (no stairs to climb) and new clients and walk-ins are always welcome. “Our goal is to provide quality hair care and great customer service for men, women and children of all ages at affordable prices,” Moyer said.
She added, “Besides the importance of attending hair classes regularly, I educate myself as well as my clients on the new trends and techniques for the coming year. There is a lot of information to learn and ideas to share just by researching on the computer.
“I’ve done chair rental for six years now and have been in the hair business for 27 years. Hairstyles come and go. If one pays attention to magazines and television, tall hair is ‘in.’”
Helping out the customer
Customers enjoy little tips to make their hair care easier. The key is to be creative and show them how to do their hair and what products and tools to use to achieve their finished result.
“It is important to know your client’s hair, always keeping in mind how to make it easier for the client to do their hair on their own at home,” Moyer said. “The goal is to go from the customer saying, ‘It never looks this good when I do it’ to saying at home, ‘I look like I just stepped out of the salon.’
“My job is to be a teacher, educator, helper, consultant and problem solver. You have to be confident and enthusiastic, and most importantly listen and ask a lot of questions.”
Moyer said these are some of the questions she frequently asks her customers:
n What kinds of problems do you have when you style your own hair at home? Is it hard to manage? Takes too much time? Doesn’t hold?
n What would you like your hair to do? Better control, manageability, fullness?
n What kinds of styling tools do you use at home? (blow dryer, rollers, curling iron, brushes, air dry, straightening iron)
n How often do you wash/style your hair—every day, every other week, two to three times per week?
n How often do you perm or color or cut your hair? At home or in the salon?
n What line of work are you in to accommodate a hairstyle right for you?
n What shampoo/conditioner and/or products do you use on your hair?
n What do you like about your hair? What don’t you like about your hair?
Hairstyling is like being a hair doctor— it is important to know the customer’s hair to keep it healthy, Moyer said.

Repeat customer programs
Jill’s Hair Design LLC also offers ways to earn free products through a retail program (punch card). Purchase eight products and receive the ninth product of equal or lesser value free (no limited purchase time).
Moyer has several client appreciation programs. New clients receive a $2 gift certificate to redeem at their next appointment. “I also have a referral program,” she said. “When the client refers a new customer to Jill’s Hair Design LLC, he or she will receive a $3 gift certificate toward their next service of their choice.”
In addition, Jill’s Hair Design LLC offers frequent client benefits (punch card). Receive eight haircuts/perms and the ninth haircut is free (shampoo/style is included). Buzz cuts are $10. For men, women and children, a partial haircut means a partial price. New pricing is in effect for children’s haircuts—ages 0 to 5, $5; 6 to 10, $1 per year.
Customers can sign up for a monthly drawing at each appointment for a chance to win a free haircut as well. “These programs add a personal touch,” Moyer said. “It is a way of saying, ‘Thank you for coming to Jill’s Hair Design LLC. I appreciate you and I look forward to taking care of your hair care needs.’”
She added, “I am happy to give back to the community and frequently donate to local fundraisers and church functions. In the future I’d like to join the Chamber of Commerce.”
Moyer offers flexible hours to accommodate customers’ busy lifestyles, work schedules, celebrations, after-school activities and health issues.
“I have done customers’ hair at their homes or nursing home facilities if they are not physically able to come into the salon on their own and have also done hair for my customers at the funeral homes.

“You have to be committed to your work and go the extra mile,” Moyer added. “People who love their career stay in it for a very long time.”
